Kirkland City Council Position 3
The Eastside Business Alliance endorses Kirkland Mayor Penny Sweet for reelection to the Kirkland City Council.
Since Mayor Penny Sweet was first elected in 2009, Kirkland has experienced significant growth. Councilmember Sweet met that challenge by investing in the key infrastructure while preserving pro-jobs policies.
Few individuals have given as much of their personal time and energy to building the Kirkland community as Mayor Sweet. She founded Celebrate Kirkland, Inc., which organizes Kirkland’s annual 4th of July celebration. She has been active in local nonprofit organizations including the Kirkland Chamber of Commerce, which recognized her twice with the “Friend of Kirkland” Award and the 2016 William C. Woods “Above & Beyond” Award for outstanding community leadership.
As the owner of The Grape Choice on the Kirkland waterfront for more than 35 years, Penny understands the challenges facing small business owners. Her broad perspective and collaborative approach are a refreshing and needed antidote to the acrimony and partisanship that is infecting modern politics. Her Council colleagues have recognized this important quality and have elected her Deputy Mayor or Mayor for seven of the last eleven years, making her a leader among leaders.
It is rare to find an elected official who was deeply involved in their community for decades before being elected. It is truly unique to find one who is universally respected for their character and accomplishments from individuals and organizations across the ideological spectrum. We urge Kirkland residents to again choose Penny Sweet for Kirkland City Council.
