1. Capital Gains Income Tax Clears Toughest Hurdle

The Legislative Session passed the halfway point last week. Saturday evening, the Senate adopted ESSB 5096 imposing a 7% excise tax on gains from the sale or exchange of certain capital assets. The vote was close, 25 - 24, and will likely face challenges in court or a public vote to repeal if it passes the House.

2. Amazon Leases New Downtown Office Tower

Amazon announced today it has signed a lease to occupy The Artise, a 600,000 square foot office tower in downtown Bellevue. Scheduled to open in 2024, this building will provide additional space for the estimated (but probably low) 25,000 employees Amazon plans to bring to Bellevue. The company now has eight properties owned, leased, or under construction in Bellevue totaling about 5.5 million square feet, double the footprint of Microsoft.
